SIERRA LEONE

An estimated 310,000 children in Sierra Leone grow up without their parents, many of them as a result of the war also many of them have been orphaned.


Childbirth & Medical care

Sierra Leone has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the world. Hospitals lack of basic equipment and medication, and factors such as poverty and lack of transportation make every pregnancy a gamble.


Child Care

18,000 of them have been orphaned due to AIDS. Access to food remains a challenge for the majority of the Sierra  Leonean families. One in four children is either moderately or severely underweight.


Foods

Sierra Leone has a deep and rich food culture.


Specialties: 

• Cassava Bread, a bread made from the flour from the

 starchy root of the cassava plant

• Okra stew, a stew made from the vegetable often referred to

 as 'lady's fingers'

• Cassava and potato leaf stews, a bit like spinach, these

 leaves are mixed with various spices, fish stock and served

 with fish, goat or chicken to order.




Regional drinks

• Star beer, is produced locally by Sierra Leone Breweries 

Limited. 

• Poyo, palm wine is a local specialty, an alcoholic brew from

 the fermented sap of the palm tree. 

• Ginger beer, a popular non-alcoholic alternative to beer.


There is no alcohol drinking age.

Homes

They are a really poor state even though they are rich in soil and diamonds.


Families

Marriage in Sierra Leone culture is viewed as a mark of maturity, and the bond of marriage brings prestige to both the bride and groom. Traditions and customs vary by ethnic group and socioeconomic status; however, it is customary for the man to offer the prospective woman and her family a mixture of fine cloth and money, known as the bride price, as an offering to begin a life together.

Schools

The Sierra Leone Civil War resulted in the destruction of 1,270 primary schools and in 2001 67% of all school-age children were out of school. The situation has improved considerably since then with primary school enrollment doubling between 2001 and 2005 and the reconstruction of many schools since the end of the war.


Games

Football is the most played sport in the country. Athletics, basketball, boxing and cricket are also common sports in the country.


Religions


Reports often list Sierra Leoneans as 60% Muslim, 10% Christian, and 30% "indigenous believers."

(Conflict Diamonds).
   Some diamonds have helped fund devastating civil wars in Africa, destroying the lives of millions. Conflict diamonds are those sold in order to fund armed conflict and civil war. Profits from the trade in conflict diamonds, worth billions of dollars, were used by warlords and rebels to buy arms during the devastating wars in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sierra Leone. Wars that have cost an estimated 3.7 million lives.
